Overcoming Gym Anxiety: Tips to Get Started

So, you’ve decided to join a gym—congrats! You’re one step closer to crushing your fitness goals. But then, out of nowhere, gym anxiety creeps in. You know, that little voice in your head saying, “What if everyone stares at me?” or “What if I swing a kettlebell and accidentally knock out a ceiling tile?” (Spoiler: You won’t.) Don’t worry; gym anxiety is super common, and we’re here to help you conquer it with humor, confidence, and a touch of sweat.

1. Remember: Everyone’s Too Busy to Notice You

Let’s get one thing straight: Nobody is watching you. Seriously. People are way too focused on their own workout (or deciding whether they’re ready to tackle double-unders) to notice if you’re rowing or just taking a breather on the rower.

2. Start Small and Scale Scale Scale

Gym anxiety often stems from feeling overwhelmed. So, don’t start by trying to deadlift your bodyweight or nail a 50-calorie bike sprint. Scaling the workouts is the key.  We ALL scale when starting.  Our coaches will help you to scale appropriately.  Never compare your workout to some else’s.  You know what they say:  Comparison is the thief of all joy.

3. Join Classes and Work With a Coach

Group classes or personal training sessions are the ultimate cheat codes. In a class, you’ll get guidance, encouragement, and maybe even a workout buddy. With a coach, you’ll have someone to teach you proper form (and confirm you’re not secretly reinventing the deadlift).  All members who are just beginning take 5 one to one personal training sessions with a coach.  You will learn all the Foundational movements, all the acronyms, how to sign in, gym culture, class structure and even where to park, where to set your things down, how to work our app to log your scores or chat with other members.  When you are done those sessions you will be READY and CONFIDENT to join group classes.  And if you love the 1:1 attention of personal training you can continue to do that for as long as you like.

4. Plan Your Workout Ahead of Time

Ever stood frozen in front of the kettlebells, pretending you’re just “assessing your options”? You can avoid that by referring to our programmed workout and the suggested target weights.  If that still leaves you wondering what the right choice is, your coach will be right there to ask that question to. Whether it’s an EMOM, AMRAP, or a skill session, we have a programming plan will help you avoid that “What do I do now?” moment.

5. Dress the Part

No need for anything fancy, but wearing clothes you feel comfortable moving in can help ease nerves. Bonus points if your shoes can survive burpees and your shirt screams, “I’m here to crush it.”

6. Use the “Buddy System”

Bring a friend to the gym! Not only does it make the experience more fun, but having someone to laugh with when you miss a box jump makes it all less intimidating. Plus, we will all cheer you on when you finally crush that PR.

7. Focus on Progress, Not Perfection

Nobody walks into the gym on day one and hits a perfect power clean. Celebrate every small win—whether it’s learning to properly hold a barbell, completing your first WOD, or finally getting the hang of double-unders. Progress and consistency is the name of the game.

8. Channel Your Inner Comedian

When in doubt, laugh it out. Accidentally tripped over your jump rope for the fifth time? Happens to the best of us. Dropped a kettlebell? Gravity is undefeated. Gym bloopers are part of the experience and make for great stories later.

9. Embrace the Community

Here’s a secret: Functional fitness gyms are full of supportive, like-minded people who were once beginners, too. Strike up a conversation in class. The camaraderie will make the gym feel like your second home.

10. Celebrate Your Courage

Walking into a gym for the first time is a HUGE win in itself. Give yourself credit for taking that step. You’re doing something amazing for your health and well-being, and that’s worth celebrating.

Final Thoughts: JUST START

Gym anxiety is real, but so is your potential. The hardest part is walking through the door that first time, but once you do, you’ll realize the gym is a space for growth, not judgment. And hey, even if you fumble with the jump rope, at least you’ll have a good laugh about it later.
